Due to this measure, the geometrical situation between the rotor and the stator parts is slightly different each time the rotor moves over the next stator vane, which results in aerodynamically different pressure pulses and hence spreads the noise emission over a broader frequency range. To avoid this phenomenon, the NF-F12’s stator guide vanes are set out in Varying Angular Distance (between 31° and 37°). Inspired by 36, we build a motion representation without using optical flow, i.e., the stacked difference of RGB between consecutive frames and the target. Acoustically, these periodic pulses lead to noises at distinct frequencies and manifest themselves as frequency spikes in the fan’s acoustic spectrum, giving it a more tonal and distinguishable character. Once in place, this IUD is effective contraception for seven years.Fibroids are mostly dependent on estrogen to stimulate their growth. An exception to this seems to be the progesterone-containing IUD, Mirena, which reduces menstrual flow, and in one recent study, has been shown to shrink fibroids slightly. In fact, birth control pills can sometimes make them grow. Hormonal treatments have relatively little effect on fibroids. Are there medical treatments for fibroids? In still other situations, the size and position of the fibroid(s) may cause pain during intercourse, increased menstrual cramps, or decreased bladder capacity. Others will cause heavy and prolonged periods. Very rarely, about 1 in 10,000 cases, a fibroid may develop into a sarcoma, or very aggressive cancer. Many fibroids produce no symptoms at all, and are simply noted during the course of routine annual examinations and Pap smears. Symptoms are caused by the size of the fibroids themselves (heaviness or pressure in the pelvis), or by pressure on surrounding organs such as the bladder or large intestine. Whether or not treatment is needed depends on the size, location, and rate of growth of the fibroids. Some fibroids will remain stable in size over many years while others will appear suddenly and grow quite rapidly. Both estrogen and progesterone hormones (products of the ovaries) are thought to promote the growth of fibroids. Each fibroid is thought to arise from a single cell which grows into a mass. All rights reserved.Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors, or growths, within the muscle wall of the uterus. If the difference is found, perhaps therapy can be targeted against this difference, and screening tests for advanced ovarian cancer can be improved.Ĭopyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Basic science research comparing the tissue microarrays of early versus advanced stage disease may be able to identify this difference. Theoretically there may be a factor that separates these 2 into different diseases, where advanced disease patients have a substance produced by their tumor that allows for early dissemination, and early stage lacks this substance and only grows locally. Early stage grows locally and does not disseminate, and advanced stage disseminates while the tumor is still relatively small. This finding supports the fact that early versus advanced ovarian cancer are 2 separate disease processes. Overall, patients with early stage ovarian cancer have diseased ovaries that are more than twice as large as those found in advanced disease. This difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). The average measurement was 4.8 cm in advanced disease, and was 10.7 cm in early stage disease. There were 110 patients analyzed: 85 with advanced disease, 25 with early stage. The dimensions for each patient were averaged into a single dimension for that patient, and then these measurements were totaled and averaged. Patient stage and all available dimensions measured on diseased ovaries were recorded. Only cases with documentation of surgical and pathologic staging and measured dimensions on pathologic specimen were included. Patients had epithelial ovarian cancer, other cell types were excluded. This was a retrospective chart review of patients in the tumor registry in 2003-2006. Theoretically if this is so, then patients with advanced stage should have smaller sized tumors than patients with early stage. The mechanism of disease progression is unknown, but patients with advanced disease may have a higher propensity for seeding of the abdominal cavity early in the disease process than those with early stage. Ovarian cancer has a different prognosis between early (I and II) and advanced stage (III and IV). The final product is sweet and rich and tangy in all of the right ways, and it tastes delicious whether you serve it slightly chilled or completely frozen. The pink bits on the topping are from mixing oreo crumbs with strawberry gelatin, which absolutely nails the flavor of that childhood popsicle coating. On top, I sprinkle some more crushed golden oreos, and then I chill the whole thing. Instead, I make a crust out of crushed golden oreos and melted butter, and cover it with simple no-bake cheesecake (one layer flavored with pureed fresh strawberries, one plain vanilla). Flowering thyme ground cover is one of the best plants to use for ground cover because it’s resilient and colorful. Spectacular ornamental herb with purple blooms and tiny evergreen leaves. ‘Elfin’ has a miniature form featuring lavender-pink flowers and extremely tiny rounded gray-green leaves. Many people prefer ground cover over grass because it looks nicer and requires a lot less work. Specific epithet from Greek means creeping in reference to the trailing growth habit of this species. Sternberg has observed that his children also have the same test anxiety from which he suffered, even though they are "A" students. His marriage to Alejandra Campos, also trained in clinical psychology, has produced two children, Seth and Sara. Sternberg not only studies love in the research setting. Sternberg states that "here, we are studying issues such as people's conceptions of love, the growth and decline of love over the course of relationships, and the structure of love in different relationships." For Sternberg himself, the study of love and close relationships often catches his greatest interest. Sternberg describes the various projects of his students as "interrelated" while individually developing a specific focus. Sternberg's research group is actively connected to groups around the world, including Israel, Tanzania, France, Norway, and Spain. International collaborations and a "labor of love" One book he has published on this subject is Our Labeled Children co-authored with Elena L. His work has also extended into studying learning disabilities in children and understanding exactly what such a designation implies. His writing style is conversational and not prohibitively academic. Sternberg has been determined to keep the integrity of his occupation at the highest level and yet available to those other than seasoned professionals. His creative approach to understanding human intelligence as a composition of creativity, emotional balance, and cognitive abilities has made him a celebrity not only among his professional colleagues, but with the general public, especially through his books, The Triangle of Love, Love The Way You Want It, and Love Is a Story: A New Theory of Relationships. Sternberg believes that life, not what is learned in the classroom, determines intelligence. To that, he added the "experiential" and "contextual," or external, to signify the entirety of cognitive ability, re-defining intelligence. Sternberg's compilation of the "componential" theory associated information processing stages with specific brain functions. Other awards have come to him from around the world.Īccording to a profile of Sternberg from the APA Monitor,"Sternberg views himself as a generalist dedicated to improving the profession for all psychologists." His book, Beyond IQ: A Triarchic Theory of Human Intelligence, however, began to define his studies more closely. In all, he is a fellow of nine APA divisions, and has won two APA awards, the Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology in 1981, and the McCandless Award. In 1994, he served as president of the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 1 (General) and in 1994–95 as president of APA Division 15 (Educational). Along with his work as the IBM Professor of Education and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Psychology at Yale, Sternberg has enjoyed a prolific career as a writer and editor. He also continued to work on investigating the analytical processes people utilize while taking intelligence tests. While at Stanford he studied with Gordon Bower and received the Sidney Siegel Memorial Award. He also received the prestigious Wohlenberg Prize and was named to Phi Beta Kappa. While at Yale he studied with Endel Tulving, graduating summa cum laude in 1972 with a BA in psychology. As a student at Yale University, Sternberg spent his summers working for the Psychological Corporation in New York, and the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, alongside writers who wrote standardized test materials. |
